Wholesale & Retail Sector
The wholesale and retail sector represents 14.8% of employment on the Tablelands (Tablelands Region - OESR data, 2006) and is the second largest employer by sector. The group has had some discussion around retail, hospitality and tourism service that experiences were variable from first class to a ‘Fawlty Towers’ like experience. A first class experience is required on Tableland, especially in retail, to overcome economic downturn.
One issue that has been identified in Retail training is the hours of 9 to 5 less travel time limits teaching time on a training day. There is a need for local retail training, rather than courses being run in Cairns.
